Ribbon Cutting!

On October 19th, 2007, the Arts Council held the official ribbon cutting for our new offices and a wonderful visual art display space called The Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery at 318 Main Street.

This is a long-awaited time for the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana. Established in 1970 and named a Regional Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission in 1989, the staff and Board of Directors of the Council have wanted to have a display space for art for many years. The opportunity came this year with the revitalization of Main Street and the entire downtown and the Board voted to stage a capital campaign. The response was amazing with more than 150 private and corporate donors contributing more than $650,000 for this wonderful public art gallery and art center. We are pleased and proud to have been of the Arts Council generation to see this project to fruition.

Gallery Hours are M-F 9:00 - 5:00; Saturdays 9:00 - 12:00 and other times by arrangement. Make it a point to stop by 318 Main - between Third & Fourth Streets and visit the new space!

Otters Boosters

"ART IN THE BALLPARK" PEOPLE'S CHOICE ART EXHIBITION

Bosse Field was the place to be on Friday, August 10, as the Otters hosted the Boys Scouts and the Arts Council of SW Indiana! This wonderful Evansville baseball park was the perfect venue to hold our second annual ART IN THE BALLPARK exhibition.

Hundreds of Otters fans visited the art tent and voted on their favorite baseball-themed art piece. Ten artists participated in this special summer event, with a total of 18 pieces on display. This year’s art entries covered the spectrum of art, including digital illustrated baseball players, a 3D giant seven-foot wooden bat, a ceramic home plate, story-telling shadow boxes and many paintings representing Bosse Field and all things baseball!

Congrats to the People’s Choice winners:

  • 1st place: Ced Hustace
  • 2nd place: Dennis Rowe
  • 3rd place tie: Doug McFarling and Billy Hedel

And a special thanks to the other participating artists:

  • Robyn Adler
  • Scarlet Fields
  • Lisa Heichelbech
  • Rita Mengon
  • Susan Petty
  • Jon Siau

The Arts Council would like to extend our appreciation to Bill Bussing and the Evansville Otters for making this event possible. In addition, we want to thank the Otter’s general manager, Deana Johnson, and her very professional staff for their help and assistance before, during and after the exhibition

Old National Bank Atrium

Art in the CityArt in the City - the Arts Council's annual members-only juried exhibition - will open to the public at a reception on Friday, September 23, from 5:30 - 7 p.m. in the lobby atrium of Old National Bank, located at One Main Street in Evansville.

This show is made possible by a generous sponsorship from Cresline-Cresent-Wabash Plastics.  Cash awards will include "The Cresline-Cresent-Wabash Plastics, Inc. Best of Show" as well as 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-place awards in both the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional categories. Honorable Mentions will also be awarded in both divisions. All awards will be presented at a 6 p.m. ceremony during the opening reception.

Art in the City is a special exhibition for us, as it provides our artist members with the opportunity to showcase their best work.  As a juried event, the show allows all entrants to have one of their two entries juried into the show.  Erika Myers-Bromwell, assistant director at New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, will be the juror.  Last year 59 artists displayed their work, and we expect a larger pool of entrants this year.

All 2D and 3D visual artists are invited to enter the show; however, Arts Council membership is required. Call the Arts Council office with questions: 422-2111.
